Using a Trust Account avoided costly establishment expenses and ensures all funds go toward helping Mark.
The account is with Heritage Building Society. It is fee-free and earns interest at 6.5% paid monthly. Any tax on interest earned is paid by Craig as the account is in his personal name.
Funds are allocated to areas identified by Mark's wife Kaylene and Craig Lucas in consultation with medical practitioners.
Contrubutors to the fund are very welcome to suggest how they would like to see funds allocated.
And contributors may view a copy of bank statements and reciepts to ensure funds are collected and allocated in accordance with the aim of the fund.

In May 2007 Mark Chapman, Producer from Big Island Pictures, suffered a stroke. With no personal medical insurance in place, the Australian filmmaking community (listed right) rallied to raise funds to assist with Mark's recovery and any long term effects of the stroke.
LATEST NEWS
Tough Times for Mark
11 May 2007
Funds previously allocated to a new swimming pool have been redirected to cover basic living expenses with Craig's permission.
Mark's weekly wage from Big Island Pictures was stopped early 2008 and the family was forced to survive on his wife's benifits and $4,990 from the trust account while Mark's pension application was finalised. The pension is now being paid and there is no need for the fund to support Marks daily living expenses.
The account balance is currently $18,850.82, earning approximately $100 per month.

Your Gift Helps Celebrate Christmas
1 Dec 2007
A small portion of funds have been allocated to directly support Mark's quality of life at home:
- $4,990 for an above ground swimming pool. It is hoped this will assist Mark's motor skills, circulation and general fitness, but if it only helps him have fun with the kids, then it's a great investment.
- $2,000 provided on the 1st of December to help celebrate Christmas.
Merry Christmas to all who have helped support Mark this year.

Mark More Comfortable at Home
13 Oct 2007
Mark is now happily back at home with Kaylene and the kids.
He is generally coping well, but Mark has struggled getting in and out of his old lounge.
In line with the fund's aim to help Mark cope with the long term effects of the stroke, the trust account paid $3,300.00 for a new leather suite that is easier to get in and out of, provides much better support and is really comfortable.
This is just the beginning of your contribution helping Mark in a practical way that he would otherwise not be able to afford.

Funds Help Mark
1 Oct 2007
Mark will leave hospital on Wednesday 3rd of October, almost six months after his stroke.
During the last couple of months he has been at home on weekends. While he has been coping really well, a couple of minor alterations will make things easier at home.
The trust account has agreed to pay for:
- a plumber to replace taps with quarter turn lever taps
- new lounge for better support and comfort
Over the next few months Mark will continue speech therapy as an outpatient in the public system. If more speech therapy is required, the trust account will pay for a private therapist.
All expenses paid by the trust account will be listed on this web site.
Another $139.33 in interest was added to the trust account today to bring the total raised to $27,372.76.

Administrator Appointed
22 Aug 2007
The Public Trustee has been appointed to administer Mark's financial affairs for the next 12 months.
This will ensure his share in Big Island Pictures and personal finances are managed in Mark's best interest while he recovers from his stroke.
The appointment of the administrator will not effect the trust account established to assist Mark and remains outside the administrator's control. It cannot pay any personal debt or business expenses.
It will pay expenses directly related to his recovery and any long term effects of the stroke.
Mark's wife Kaylene will continue to act as his personal guardian.

Home Soon
21 Aug 2007
Hi All
I went to visit Mark yesterday. He is now walking totally on his own and his speech is also improving. I gathered from what he was telling me that he is going back to Laidley permanently in four weeks time. I thought that I would let you know so that you can plan to go and visit him during this time as it may be a little harder to get out to Laidley to visit him.
Kind Regards,
Eve

Interest on Interest
2 Aug 2007
The Trust for Mark Chapman is earning interest with another $121.01 credited to the account for July. This brings the total interest earned by the account to $197.13 since May.
There are no fees or charges with this Heritage Building Society account, so your donation is compounding while we wait to see how the funds will best help Mark.

Up and Walking
30 July 2007S
Mark is up and walking without assistance.
His daughters visited him last weekend and Mark was determined to show them he was able to walk without any help. A great milestone.
In the last few weeks he has also learnt to write left handed, conquering the alphabet and some simple words. And while progress is slow, his speech is slowly improving.
A big thanks to Krissy and Anthony who have been treating Mark to lunch and a movie on Sunday afternoons. It is the highlight of Mark's week.
On Friday Mark will go home to spend the weekend with his family. It will be the first night out of the hospital since the 11th of May.
It will also be an important opportunity to see what equipment or structural modifications may be needed at home to help Mark regain his independence. Funds donated to the trust account will assist with these types of expenses and any other items needed to help his long term recovery.

Successful Fundraiser with Sydney Film Festival

A fundraising premier screening last night raised $2,475 for Mark Chapman.
Over seventy people gathered at the Dendy Opera Quays Cinema in Sydney to see 2 episodes of Downunder Grads, a new series Produced by Mark Chapman with Film Australia and SBS.
The audience loved Downunder Grads. There
was quite a long and engaging Q & A with directors Phoebe
Hart and Randall Woods, followed by a few celebratory drinks.
Many of the guests passed on
their good wishes and thoughts for Mark.
Additional donations were received from a number of people who could not attend.
The evening was hosted by Film Australia and SBS, supported by the Sydney Film Festival and Ticketmaster.
Thank you to all involved.

Mark In Good Spirits
13 June 2007
Dear all,
After visiting Mark last night I can let you all know that he is having dramatic improvements on a daily basis. He was in such good spirits last night which was so fantastic to see. After the stroke Mark had no movement on the right hand side of his body. Yesterday he was showing Erin and I how he can now touch his nose with his right arm and how he can also do leg lifts with his right leg.
I was looking on the web site and was amazed by how many people had done a days work for Mark, it is absolutely fabulous. Thank you to everybody who has put some money in to this.
I am still reading Mark any new emails, stories and anecdotes that anyone send through to me and will continue to do so. Please feel free to send any thing that you would like me to read to him.
Kind Regards,
Eve

Busy Schedule
7 June 2007
Briefly caught up with Mark today. Just a week into rehab he is lifting his right arm and moving his right leg. His speech is improving with new words every day. It is the result of a hectic schedule working with three different therapists each day.
Staff estimate he will be in Rehab for about three months.
The funds continue to roll in, with more significant contributions from Mark's friends and colleagues in the last couple of days.
I am very surprised at the generous donations from people who do not know him personally, but know Mark's films or his work supporting the industry.
Thanks
Craig Lucas

Starting Rehab
1 June 2007
The Kinetone Awards are now open for nominations. Mark should win this, we should all nominate him.
Last night I went to see Mark and he has improved immensely. He was moving his right hand nearly all the time I was there. It is now becoming a bit of party trick. I am continuing to read the new cards and emails that come to him which he really enjoys.
There is a recreational room in the hospital where Mark spends time in the evening. The telephone number for him there is 07 3240 2679. It is not his private phone and is shared by all the patients, but it might be worth while giving him a call so that he can hear your voices.
Please note that he will not be able to have a full conversation with you and his vocabulary is very limited at the moment. Here are some tips of what the hospital recommend you talk about.
- Familiar people, places, interests and experiences the person has had in the past
- Talk about what is happening at home, your day at work etc
- Keep the conversation simple
- Speak a little slower than you would normally as it takes a little longer to process what is said
- Use short simple sentences
- Give the person enough time to reply
- Present only one idea at a time
- Don't talk to him as if he were deaf
- Ask simple questions like "where is", "do you want"
- Don't ask questions where the person is required to make a choice
- Do not tease
- Speak to him as you would to any other adult
Please don't worry if you feel uncomfortable talking to Mark over the phone. I do not expect you all to call him, it is just an option for those people who feel comfortable and may not live in the area.
Kind Regards
Eve

New Interest in Mark's Trust
1 June 2007
With the help of all those listed, we have exceeded the magic $5,000 limit when the balance now earns 6.15% interest on the daily balance. So your contribution is already working for Mark with a grand total of $6.46 interest received today.
It's a great start.

Moves to Rehab
29 May 07
Dear all,
Mark Chapman has now been moved to a rehabilitation ward within the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.
Please note that visiting hours have changed slightly and it is now only possible to visit Mark between 12 mid day to 7 p.m.. He is now in GARU - Building 7 in the BIRU (Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit).
I understand that he will now be involved with lots of rehabilitation specialists who will work with Mark on a daily basis.
Thanks to all of you have been to see Mark, please continue to do so as you can tell that he truly benefits from these visits.
Thanks again,
Eve Williamson Big Island Pictures
Mark's Recovery
25 May 07
For a man who has suffered a serious stroke, Mark is doing very well.
When I first saw him a few days after the stroke he was bedridden, completely paralysed on the right side with limited coordination on the left, unable to speak or eat.
Now his left hand side coordination is rapidly improving. He is already sitting unassisted in a chair, eating solid food and playing memory games with his therapist. He looks brighter and has even learned to say a few words.
On Friday I visited Mark to give him and his wife, Kaylene your emails containing all your kind messages. They are very grateful and Kaylene was overwhelmed with the generous support.

Trust Account for Mark
11 May 2007
Mark Chapman and I have made films together since we were at college. I have seen him develop from a crazed bearded biker driving cabs all night to pay for his tuition into one of Australia's leading documentary Producers.
I was shocked to hear Mark suffered a severe stroke on 11 May. He is recovering slowly.
But I was even more concerned to hear, despite his very thorough, organised approach to producing films, Mark had no personal medical or financial insurance.
I guess it was because of the cost. Mark always put as much money as he could on the screen. What was left was reinvested into his business to develop new projects. Mark's investment provided opportunities and jobs for hundreds of filmmakers, including me. So, I thought it was time to repay his investment and I do a days work for Mark.
I have set up a trust account for Mark opening it with $650.00, my freelance DOP wages for the day.
The money will help pay for some of the major expenses needed to assist his recovery or help deal with any long term effects of the stroke.
I hope others might also like to work for Mark. You could work an hour or two. You might be able to work a whole day.
If you would like to join me, work for as long as you can afford to for Mark, then send in your contribution to the following account:

I know Mark and his family will appreciate any support.
Thanks
